The world's economy is in semi shutdown at present.
We all want it to return, bringing jobs and opportunities and a sense of financial security again.
This will require massive investment from both private and public sectors for years and years to come.
We don’t care which sectors or industries grow; we just want growth and jobs and prosperity.
I don't think many people would disagree with these simple, obvious, statements.
But we have a choice. One that is unprecedented. Also, one that we may not notice because we are so deeply focussed on fighting the coronavirus.
Here's the choices. They will lead us in completely different directions as a species, and potentially as a planet.
We can massively invest in the same industries that are in shut down ie. get back to normal.
We can - globally - agree a Green version of the Marshall Plan (the massive reinvestment programme set up to restart the world's economies at the end of WW2).
Note that both options would require the same scale of investment but one is scattergun and would return us to the Climate Change crisis that we would later need to address.
The other could have this massive investment - private and public - targeted at those industries, sectors, innovations, inventions, and tasks that will not produce greenhouse gases, but rather reduce them to a sustainable level. This could save literally millions of lives, according to statistics previously published by the World Health Organisation on the human impact of climate change. It would also save us from the massive cost of a future, necessary transition from a carbon-based to green economy.
So in this way we can resolve the biggest problem the planet and humanity has ever faced - climate change - by making use of this desperate, enforced, economic shutdown as the starting point for a genuinely sustainable recovery and growth.
This, in my view, would be the best way we can remember all those who have died and will die from this dreadful pandemic. It would also be our way of saying we are still all in its together, not just for ourselves, but for our children and our children's children, and the planet we love and depend on.
